Virtual Reality

22

Tried searching for that other thread, but couldn't get any results, so will fire VR stuff in here.

Seems to be a fair bit of momentum building behind VR, and it only seems to be getting more and more interest.

The Switch seems like Wii 2.

0 |

RJ, you get PSVR?

0 |

Aye she bought it but it's going away till Xmas ffs raging

0 |

It's my Xmas and bday present

0 |

But when the kids fuck off to bed tonite I'm gonna stick it on make sure the thing works and try out skyrim before packing it away

0 |

Only right to test it. Maybe even a retest to make sure in few days time

0 |

sat up last night playing the fuck out of it, decided to keep Skyrim for over xmas but had a blast with VR worlds and the demo discs and fuck me if it isn't impressive as fuck, the sense of scale in some of the stuff is incredible, played battletanks a tron like tank game in which you sit in a big battle tank and fight shit and it was bloody amazing, the 3D, the depth perception etc are all top notch and so far removed from the likes of google cardboard it may as well be a different technology.

I really hope this ARK Park is class even though ill be buying it for the kids but i can only imagine what it be like to view some dino's properly scaled cause thats the best thing about VR you really do feel like your inside the worlds.

0 |

even the missus whose tech averse was impressed, she checked out into the deep and kept trying to kick shit and reach for stuff, gonna get that everybody explodes as its meant to be a good party game and definitely buying Trek.. didnt even bother unpacking the moves so i was just playing the controller demos.. i will say that its the gen1 unit so theres a fuck ton of cables

0 |

You'll like Resi 7, scary as fuck.

I've not really been on mine for a few months and tried that Rigs game, had to turn it off in the tutorial as I was getting wild motion sickness. I think you motion sickness does pass when you get used to it but some games are defo worse than others, I think that racing game demo was bad, Resi 7, Until Dawn Rush of blood fine.

Number of times per week teenagers go out without their parents

i2.wp.com/www.babeltec...

1 |

tbf it looks more like the recession is causing that than iPhones.

0 |

The majority of time spent outdoors by 8th graders without their parents doesn't involve any expenditure so is unlikely to be affected by recession. Also, the US recession (by academic definition) ended in Jun-09 or in 2012 using the looser definition after which time the trend still continues

Let's face it chaps had we access to all the tech as a kid we'd hardly leave the house

0 |

Surprised takki hasn't got a VR device yet, 90% of the posts in here are from him

1 |

Do you have ps pro rj?

0 |

I'm dying to get premium VR Lemac, but the next gen headsets are going to be a lot better mainly due to higher resolution panels in them, but there's other big pros for holding off another while too in term of new tech. Nothing wrong with having an interest in something either tbf, plus I'm just glad to see that it's now become extremely accessible to mainstream consumers. Should start to ramp up the interest in the platform and in hardware/software developments.

0 |

If you hold of for the next better spec tech won’t you technically be holding off forever because something better is always round the corner?

1 |

Nah

0 |

Ok

1 |

The next versions of the premium headsets should have a big jump in the screen pixel density. Two times or more the pixels. There's also talk of eye tracking, wireless etc, though not sure those things will be in next version, but upgraded screens will definitely be included which will make a big difference to the visual quality over current ones. It's the same with any first gen hardware, they always run hardware that's already kinda dated due to the initial development process not being as refined. Now that they have had the consumer products out a while and have the manufacturing processes and streams set up, the design process and hardware manufacturing should catch up with more up to date components. And maybe better pricing, too.

0 |

Muzka is kind of right here though - VR tech is in a rapid development phase and you'll be buying quickly out of date tech for another few years at least.

0 |

Aye, all tech now is advancing fast-as these days, although I'd be happy with a decent upgrade in the screen definition for my initial purchase, as I said originally. Can't see there being a big jump in screen resolutions for a while after that anyway, so would be a reasonable time to get in on it IMO.

0 |

Not all tech is equal rapid development.

Phones, laptops, tablets, consoles etc are making slight improvements each time even though they blond people with spec bumps etc

But vr is new and like any product in its infancy it's development starts rapidly before levelling out after many years.

Let's not argue though, I just thought with vr over the next few years there will be a big advance around the corner then Sony will have their vr 2 and Microsoft, apple Nintendo etc. Will all make big releases over the following years

0 |

Blind, not blond

0 |

I've a Pro Muzka, i bought it knowing i would eventually grab a PSVR at some point in time so may as well have the best hardware to run it even though I hear the base ps4 runs VR just fine due to Sony’s insistence on a minimum framerate above all else.

I’d love to try the rift & vive to see how much better it is to the PSVR but staying with PlayStation was a no brainer for me and at £300 for the entire kit including dual moves and Skyrim+VR Worlds was simply too much of a bargain to pass up on, plus I know PSVR ain’t gonna be upgraded until PS5 so at least it won’t become obsolete in a years’ time.

As for 2nd gen PCVR I’m sure it’ll blow the ballicks aff me, because everything I’ve seen in PSVR has wow’d me, yes the resolution is low and things aren’t quite as pin sharp as were used to but all that just fades into the background when you’re scaled properly inside a game with absolutely flawless head tracking.

Tech wise, the PSVR is running a single custom made Sony 1080p oled panel running 60fps upscaled to 120fps for buttery smooth motion, PCVR has dual 1200p screens running at basically whatever your hardware can muster, yes we now have affordable tech (well if you can call a £400 video card affordable) to run a single 4K display at 60fps but dual screens?? Fuck no, that requires a monster piece of kit so will all that suddenly become affordable next year? Doubt it so you’d need to make some serious graphical compromises to get that 2x4k at a constant 60fps+ yeah it can be done if you’re willing to upgrade everything but you will have a clear advantage over PSVR, I just personally don’t think it’s worth such a massive outlay, a Pro+PSVR is like £600 what’s that a price of a single 1080ti.

This is definitely the gaming leap I’ve been looking for, this is on par if not better than the 2D sprites > 3D jump of years ago and I cannot wait to see what it’s going to be like in 5yrs time let alone 10yrs

0 |

All good points RJ, seems a well thought out decision :)

0 |

Think I might pick up pro at Christmas then get the vr next year

0 |

PSVR is amazing for VR at this time. Such good value and it's bound to have a huge positive effect for VR in general. Bound to be a fair few sold for Xmas. I can only imagine the madness first time players of Skyrim are going to have with it, too. Lucky bastards. It's outselling Nintendo Switch as well, apparently. Although, that's maybe not saying much tbf.

RJ, the higher res screens don't actually need to be driven by higher res gfx. The higher res screens, even if they're just running 1080 content, will still have huge benefits in terms of screen door effect, image clarity and sharpness. Its the fact your eyeballs are right beside the screens, looking through lenses that make the current gen screens pixelly/screen door. If you swapped out those screens with ones able to put in 2 or more times the pixel density, but still giving it the same gfx stream, you'd still see massive benefits as the screen door effect would be minimised and the image would look sharper/more defined.

If/when eye tracking is implemented (whether it's in next generation or through attachable addons e.g. - www.theverge.com/2017/... ) and the software/driver side of things is improved to take advantage of the higher res screen (e.g. foveated rendering), then you could have have the 4k graphics (via the foveated rendering) on dual screens even with todays hardware. Hard to say whether the eye tracking tech will be available next gen, but the advantage of having higher resolution screens, even with todays hardware, will be a good for VR.

I reckon in around 10 years we'll be delving in to VR worlds in 90+fps 4K HDR like this

The difference between non VR graphics in 10 years is the above versus this

and that is kinda what VR looks like now

0 |

all that tech is great stuff takk, especially the foveting rendering and eye tracking but i couldn't wait for another year or so, ffs m8 we've been harping on about VR for ages lol so i decided to leap, i get what your doing you're gonna leap when everything is right due to the cost of PCVR but it seems that the PSVR is selling out everywhere which is great fucking news cause that means more games and more games means more units sold which means VR ain't going anywhere soon.

As for screendoor and upclose pixels, i have no idea what magic Sony have used on their screens but you can not see any screendoor or pixels, trust me i've looked.. the "start screen" to VR Worlds is this big cathedral like structure with a dome on top and marble floor and it really feels fucking cavernous and directly in front of you is an orb that changes structure depending on what game you're about to play i.e into the deep it becomes a ball of sloshing water and on another it becomes a planet with a Saturn like ring of hundreds of mini rocks orbiting around it, i swear i had a massive smile on my bake when i leaned forward and stuck my head into the ring and all the little rocks started bouncing off my view.. its mental

Christ i can only imagine a VR world made by those insane geniuses at Guerrilla or Naughtydog at that level of fidelity..

Muzka if your gonna jump on a pro, id pick one up in this black friday sale as i gotta hand it to Sony they've knocked a right few quid of their tech

1 |

I'm all for people getting VR right now if thats what they want to do. PSVR is amazing value for money at the minute, has plenty of great content and it will be brilliant for VR in general. Now is definitely the best time there's been yet to get in to VR, especially if you already have a PS4 Pro. I'd probably get PSVR right now too if I had one. And it should give a good few years of VR, easy, and for £250 with a couple of games, it's a bargain. But I got my GTX1070 with VR in mind, and I'm happy to wait a bit longer for the next versions of the PCVR hardware.

When I tried the Rift I didn't notice the screendoor effect at all really either, but from reading reviews and owners longer term views, it's something that you pick up over time with current gen headsets. Another niggle with current gen is the drop off in sharpness with things further away from the viewer in VR. Distant things become blurry. That would also be helped by higher res/pixel density screens.

0 |

Oh aye pin sharp screens with no clouding, screendoor or discernible pixels would be amazing, at the minute PSVR is pretty much PS3 levels of quality but the immersion more than compensates, can you imagine when they get these things engineered down to a simple wrap around pair of glasses with a wireless transmitter, inbuilt camera for mixed reality and all powered from your 1080ti equivalent phone!

0 |

for any PSVR user, PSN are having a black friday sale and some good VR games on sale, Star Trek Bridge Crew is 50% off down to £20!! or Gran Turismo incl. VR is £25

0 |

Bonkers.

Was reading about the progress of technology last night and it was saying about how the mobile phones in our pockets now are more powerful than the multi-million dollar supercomputers from the late 90's. Here's a bit of a run down on them. Look at the top 3 supercomputers... then look at your phone lol

So Takk finally put on Skyrim, she fucked off to bed early so I went and got the psvr out for a blast... Jesus Wept, you're inside Skyrim!!! It's insanely good

Now I only played down to the first town as I could feel a faint myself getting a slight disorientation as I had all that vr sickness shit set to off and from reading plenty about it you simply stop and take a break, you continue you'll get sick so I need to get my VR legs so to speak.

But the sense of scale is realistic as fuck, mountains yes they looking like big fuck off digital mountains waaay of in the distance and tall as shit, the Dragons... Holy shit they're enormous lol they've never felt this big and the caves and caverns are again atmospheric and claustrophobic as fuck.

When you fight your first giant spiders you're brain takes a wee Wtf moment when they lunge at you again due to the size of the fuckers.

When you finally emerge into the actual world I was mouth open thinking fucking hell if his is so bloody good what's the next gen gonna be like, aye can definitely see me plowing through Skyrim again thinking about all the cool as fuck places I can't wait to revisit plus I've never played the expansions so I'm looking forward to tackling those, also one thing I never really noticed before is the shit ton of wildlife about cause your field of view is always shifting as you look about you notice so much more, loads of deer, rabbits and birds about

1 |

Class lad. Great to hear it's a winner. From what I've read, most people get their VR legs in no time. What character type did you do last time? The mage/stealth route with your character might be cool in VR. I'd say the spells and summoning of magic creatures would be pretty cool looking. It's really good to see this taking off, plenty of positive stuff online about it. Wasn't long ago people were saying VR is a fad, won't work, consumers won't buy in... It'll be interesting to see how PSVR has sold after Xmas. Seems like a lot of people are getting it.

0 |

Tbf I played a stealth archer / magic user last time as it was great craic 1-shotting cunts in the shadows from a distance, I'd say each class would be brilliant to play in VR, looking forward to trying the moves out see how it adds to the game

0 |

Also VR porn, fucking hell... stuck on the PlayStation YouTube app and it gives you a vr section so I started off checking out the new York flyovers in a helicopter, really well done but up I was checking out various links and came across MilfVR clips... Jesus wept talk about uncannily realistic, I can see me ahem.. investigating that a bit more, I actually backed up a bit when she came over to you and she's right in your face, no dort as it's YouTube but it's all boobs in her face stuff and the scale, presence thing is proper realistic

0 |

Don't fancy getting caught with my balls out with a big helmet strapped to my face though, so I'll need to get them all booked on a 2week holiday soon

2 |

lol that could be there next ad

my bro has a psvr, and lent it to me when he was in magaluf. Its decent, but the resolution is just way too low. loved driveclub, but its just too pixelly, and the pop-in is a bit distracting.

The only thing the psvr did for me is reinforce how much i need a proper PC and VR system.

0 |

yeah had another blast at the weekend, yeah the resolution Lemac could definitely do with doubling, 4K would indeed be fucking sweet but i just think tech wise and for money, PSVR+Pro is a lot easier on the wallet than a fully fledged PC+Rift and from what i've read the upgrade in visuals are simply not worth the additional expenditure, 2nd gen headsets yes, but not for 1st gen..

anyways Skyrim i was bit worried familiarity would start to set in as i had played the shit out of the original, but it was seriously like playing it anew, all the old familiar houses take on a new lease as you peer around a table or look over a desk, i find myself not plowing through it but taking my time as you would naturally in a house or walking around an area and just taking it all in, i cannot fucking wait to get to Markath as it was one of my favourite places visually in the original game so if Whiterun is blowing me away i cant imagine how this place is gonna look vignette.wikia.nocooki...

Loving hearing people talking about Skyrim in VR. Giving me serious #FOVMO.

0 |

Im really happy people are enjoying skyrim so much in vr. Gives some good hope for fallout vr and it should mean what ever the next big project Bethesda say they are working on will no doubt have the possibility of vr. Been looking and there seem to be a massive amount of actual full games coming out on all vr platforms in 2018. Many look interesting, only thing that seems a bit shit as playstation seem to have loads of exclusives as do oculus. Seems silly to be splitting the market so early in the tech. On the plus side it looks like both companies are spunking a good bit of money on some interesting Vr games. Saw GTA working with the vive with an unofficial mod last year, Seemed to work well wonder why there has been no talk of gta vr release.

0 |

For those with PSVR, this is a really cracker game, especially in VR - www.playstation.com/en...

0 |

www.viveport.com/subsc... thats a pretty large amount of content for 6 quid a month.

Im still on the verge of just getting a vive. Just going to wait see how much i spunk over christmas. But that sale 699 for it with doom and fallout and a month of that subscription is tempting.

0 |

really wanna try the vive and rift now that i've had a taste of proper VR but £700... away de fuk

Rift is chep 5 star it up
