Virtual Reality

2

Tried searching for that other thread, but couldn't get any results, so will fire VR stuff in here.

Seems to be a fair bit of momentum building behind VR, and it only seems to be getting more and more interest.

"YouTube will soon add a feature that will support 360-degree videos"

"After a year of experiments, Hollywood has begun to embrace virtual reality as a potentially lucrative part of its future. 21st Century Fox has crafted an immersive clip using the film Wild, while Time Warner's HBO has created a similar experience with Game of Thrones."

AR would be better for porn tbh - overlay other mens - I mean womens - faces over your partners. Vast market for that one.

0 |

...or animals faces

Solve paedophilia right there

0 |

BOOM!

Now we're getting somewhere.

0 |

I don't want to live in a world where people are using VR headsets to ride Final Fantasy characters.

I absolutely reckon you're too late there Wayne.

0 |

haha don't knock it til you've tried it, mate!

OOVOO PLANS TO BRING THEIR 120 MILLION USERS TO VR

Oovoo, one of the leading social media companies in the world, is getting into the VR space, according to JP Nauseef the company’s managing director. In an exclusive interview with Upload, Nauseef and CMO Chris Wire revealed the company has plans to integrate its platform with Oculus VR.

“The universe of possibilities is virtually endless,” said Nauseef, “we are picking the applications very carefully but integration with Oculus is one of those.” When pressed for further details Nauseef remained coy, “we want to save some surprises for later.” However, he promised that further announcements in the next two quarters and hinted at the mobile world conference and Barcelona being the place where the platform will be revealed. “This is the year, it’s going to be exciting.”

Can just see people selling yet to be built houses etc being all over this kind of thing in a few years. I know it only a tech demo but it looks pretty impressive. A simple game like gone home in a house that looks like that on the rift would be unreal.

0 |

oovoo have 120 million users? funnily we were using it in class today and was first I had ever heard of it

0 |

The legalities round that house idea would be insane. So much room for misrepresentation.

0 |

I know people who bought an apartment just on the drawings and a couple of 3d models. Having that extra gimmick to sell the house would be great. And as a customer i would be happy to have a nosy about in VR. Of course you know its not going to be 100% accurate but would give you a good idea.

0 |

wee disclaimer would sort out all legalities

0 |

There's a lot of people in the world, Muzka.

More VR/CGI property...

It wont be long before in game graphics are as good as that. Mental.

0 |

but with 120 million users you think I would have at least heard it mentioned before

0 |

Nearly every property development brochure ever made could be open to misrepresentation, tbf. I've never seen one which is an exact representation of the finished work.

This will definitely be something which will become the norm for VR, imo. Commercial refits, hospitality refits, etc.

0 |

There are huge social networking sites in the likes of Russia and Chine that hardly anyone has heard of.

0 |

That video I posted above shows them changing colours of mats and cupboards etc. Class stuff.

0 |

Yea was impressed when they started changing the colours of stuff in the room, was waiting for him to look out the window in that vid. I didnt play it but was that silent hill demo last year looked really impressive. And that was just a couple of corridors. This kind of thing would be great for a csi style game walk into a murder scene walk about looking for clues.

Did your new plastic version of cardboard arrive yet takki?

"Nighttime Terror proves that top-down shooters work perfectly on the Oculus Rift. The use of head-tracking to aim feels natural and instinctive, and makes it easier to aim at distant foes. Definitely a game worth checking out for any arcade shooter fan."

What did you think of evolution of verse takki? I was blown away.

0 |

Haven't watched it yet. Downloaded the app, but forgot about it! Will download now and get a look at it later!

0 |

This is the sort of thing I'm really looking forward too when it comes to VR. Educational/informative stuff.

Holy shit. That is pretty brilliant, mcduvet. Music videos in that style will be amazing. Can't wait to see what Bjork is doing.

The train sequence is fantastic, its hard to look!

Reporter says the 'headsets' go on general sale in around 12 months time and will cost around 220 euros... wonder where they got that info from?

0 |

Been following the rift progress pretty closely myself and haven't heard anything about a release date. It seems logical it might come out in a years time but really doubt it will be as cheep as 220 euros.

0 |

I was thinking out before Xmas 2015. They have said all along that they want it to be really competitively priced, so as to achieve good uptake. It'd be class if it was that sort of money. I kinda struggle to see it being quite that cheap, though.

0 |

facebook will no doubt subsidize the hardware in order for it to get mass market appeal

0 |

Holu fuck, this looks stunning...

Hey guys, I'm one the art lead on our latest VR tech demo, Earthlight. Earthlight uses the Oculus Rift and Kinect 2 to transport you to the International Space Station and it features one of, if not the most, realistic depiction of the ISS and the Low Earth Orbit environment. Earthlight will be demo'd at GDC2015 at our booth (#2041) The project will be live at GDC2015, at booth 2041 alongside our Kinect 4 Unreal workshops. Earthlight launch trailer is live at:

boring as fuck, fancy demo you watch once and that's it. Where's the lasers, aliens and explosions?

0 |

I don't have any way of viewing VR, but I found some 3D porn last night by accident. Anyone tried that?

0 |

accident

1 |

It's the tech and the possibilities which all these demos are showing off. Being able to explore the ISS would be an amazing experience.

Not tried the porn. Looks good though.

1 |

This is one of the things that I like the idea of. I can see people being able to explore and experience locations from films and TV shows, maybe via a download, kinda like the extras on DVDs, etc...

"Take a few moments on the couch to enjoy viewing our sun. This is my fan tribute to the solar observation deck concept and set depicted in the 2007 movie Sunshine, directed by Danny Boyle."

"This is meant to be one of the more calm Oculus Rift experiences where you can spend some time relaxing and looking around. Take in the prominences while John Murphy's 'Adagio in D Minor' plays as you approach the viewing deck glass. View information on the monitors from the Solar Dynamics Observatory in the adjacent science lab.
It can be a good introduction for those experiencing VR for the first time."

0 |

be great for digital encyclopaedias and education also

0 |

Yeah. The educational possibilities of it are mind blowing.

0 |

I'd say there is going to be a serious amount of VR stuff coming out at GDC 2015, too.

0 |

I know it won't happen but would be great if valve just pull a valve and say at gdc here you go, stream vr here it is on sale tomorrow. But seriously hope some sort of release date gets hinted at gdc for the rift. Seems like plenty of cool content out already to keep busy with for a while at least. Still to see a good looking full game that would be worth paying for yet though.
